Ground Source Heat Pumps for Commercial use

As commercial projects are generally on the larger size they often require large heat pumps linked to bore holes as available land is an issue, the costs can be prohibitively expensive. What is often overlooked is that bore holes are an exceptionally good source of free cooling, with constant ground temperatures of around 10 degrees C. This can be linked into the buildings cooling system, which has the added advantage of effectively storing the heat extracted from the building underground, using chilled beams or fan coils making the heat pump more efficient.

If the building heating and cooling requirements are looked at as a whole, then the bore hole costs can normally be split between heating and cooling, and will be looked on more favourably by clients, making the building easily comply with energy reduction targets along with valuable BREAM points.

Evans Easyspace, The Eco Business Park

We were asked by KPP Architects of Leeds to do a feasibility study on the best possible Renewable Heat Source for one of Evans Easyspace buildings in Ludlow, Shropshire. The best solution was a Ground Source Heat Pump to provide under floor heating and hot water requirements for offices and a workshop.

The Ground Source Heat Pump was a key element in achieving a BREAM Excellent Standard. By installing the GSHP a 20%+ CO2 carbon saving has been achieved.
